ISO/IEC 42001 provides a framework for managing an organization’s use and development of artificial intelligence. It brings responsibility, risk assessment, documentation, and decisions into an ongoing management process.

What changes in practice?

The organization defines its AI policy, assigns responsibilities, understands where AI is used, and reviews its risks and effects. Decisions need a record: who approved a use case, on what basis, and when it should be reviewed again.

Where it fits

An AI management system should connect management, technology, and legal teams. It supports continuous improvement as tools and uses change. It does not replace secure development, information security, privacy obligations, or the judgment needed for a particular use case.
