ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 often appear in the same customer questionnaire, but they serve different purposes. The right starting point depends on your customers, your services, and the scope you need to demonstrate.

ISO 27001

ISO 27001 defines requirements for an information security management system. It connects risks, responsibilities, controls, and ongoing improvement within an agreed organizational scope. Certification is performed by an independent certification body.

SOC 2

A SOC 2 report examines controls relevant to the selected Trust Services Criteria for a service organization. Type I addresses the design of controls at a specified date. Type II also addresses their operating effectiveness over a period. American customers frequently request these reports when assessing service providers.

Start with the requirement

Ask the customer which report or certification they need, what service it must cover, and when it is required. Shared controls and evidence can support both programs, but one does not automatically replace the other.
